The Rocks Heritage Interpretation Strategy


The Rocks Heritage Interpretation Strategy will guide the way interpretation can be integrated into the life of The Rocks and engage with our visitors, residents and workers. The aim is to stimulate our senses in the way history and its many individual stories are presented. Good interpretation will give our visitors a pleasing and memorable experience of The Rocks while providing sufficient intellectual content to perhaps lead them on to further and more detailed enquiry.

The Rocks Discovery Museum has brought to life the wonderfully rich Rocks experience through its wide ranging overview of history and interpretation. This strategy describes the ways some of these stories can be showcased through the precinct as well as other technologies and means to stimulate ongoing interest with heritage and story telling.

The strategy is divided into the four key areas of physical installations, tours, e commerce and events.

Installations include:

  • Building Genealogies to document and collate authentic stories of key buildings and their associated public places and the way they have evolved over the years.
  • Footpath Inlays to stimulate questions by subtly drawing attention to detail in the environment and interpreting the wider streetscape
  • Windows on The Rocks to look back in time and catch special glimpses and interpretation of original fabric.
  • Picture This Historic Landscape to present scenes mounted in locations to give visitors a glimpse of the past superimposed over the present.
  • Peopling The Rocks interprets the lives, stories and experiences of people connected to The Rocks and the places and events that were important in their lives.


Self-Guided Walks are being currently being developed. The walks focus on bringing specialist interest stories to the streets including detailed presentation of facts, imagery and interpretation relating to particular stories, places and areas of special interest for our visitors.

E Commerce will reinforce the authentic heritage values of The Rocks and make available heritage resources through The Rocks website.

Events build on authentic heritage values of The Rocks by expanding our visitors’ experience of history from the many visual offerings around The Rocks to the sounds and tastes from the past.
